In a society where the boom in technological developments is leading us towards what is known as the digital revolution and where collaboration through platform models is what experts predict as a key factor for the future of the Internet, FIWARE is born.
FIWARE is an entirely European project, jointly financed by private companies and public funds, which is framed within the context of the strategies established by the European Union, which aim to improve Europe’s competitive position and which specifically has goals for 2020. This is why this set of actions is known as Europe 2020.
As can be seen, there are two elements to take into account to understand what the purpose of FIWARE is. On the one hand the technological development, which is contributing to the creation of a new context where applications through the cloud and the Internet of Things (IoT), are able to give us data in real time.
Companies and organizations need to update and adapt to this new and changing environment in order to remain competitive and at the same time offer a better service to citizens. FIWARE aims to solve this.
On the other hand, as previously mentioned, everything points to the fact that the future of the Internet will be closely related to data sharing. A collaborative environment where applications are developed by third parties and integrated into platforms where everything is focused on establishing a future where companies are more efficient, more competitive and provide a better service to both citizens in general and consumers.
Based on these two factors, FIWARE was born, a platform designed to help organizations and companies in this transition, so that they can become totally innovative businesses adapted to the real needs of the new environment in which we live.
Within the context of Open Data, IoT- Internet of Things- and cloud computing, FIWARE is an opensource platform that allows the integration of apps and solutions developed by third parties through a very simple, totally secure and low cost process. All this is possible thanks to the development of API’s with opensource technologies.
All the tools offered by FIWARE are ready to be used in FIWARE Lab, an experimentation space for developers and entrepreneurs in the IT sector to create applications and projects that can be tested with real data.
FIWARE, within the framework of the Europe 2020 guidelines, has identified Smart Cities, E-Health, E-Learning, Energy and Environment, Transport, Agriculture, Media and Content and Logistics as preferred sectors. As can be seen, the main sectors are all those focused on improving competitiveness and quality of life in Europe.
In addition to the unique opportunity it offers to develop apps and projects, the advantages do not end here because for those start-ups that develop viable apps, funding will be provided. In fact, €100,000,000 is available to boost all those apps and projects that can truly contribute to improving Europe.
